The number of people that can combine in a task is dependant on the type of task and the lead character’s Command skill.
Each task must be examined individually and as a result, some tasks will have a limit on the number of people that can accomplish it, while others will not. An example might be the repairing of a freighter. Perhaps 20 or more people can work on a ship at a time, but if a computer station was damaged inside the ship, perhaps only 3 people can work on it at once. Therefore, the next contributing factor is the skill of the leader.
The lead character usually is the character with the highest command skill, but in some situations, this may not be the case. As an example, we will again use the repair of the freighter. The leader in this case mould most likely be the ship’s captain as he or she is the one in control. However, the Captain may have a chief engineer who is supervising the operation. In either case, the character who has control is the one who’s Command skill will depend on how many people can perform the task.
The number of dice that the controlling character has in his or her Command skill is the number of people that that particular character can command at once. Example: The Moon Swing is being repaired by the members of Thermal Force after a fierce fire-fight with a squadron of TIE fighters. Ledala, being the Captain of the ship takes control of the situation. Her command skill is 4D. As a result, she may command up to and including 4 individuals (including herself).
Once the number of people has been decided can work together, each individual, except for the commanding character rolls the skill pertaining to the actual task. Example: The members of Thermal Force involved are Ledala (repair skill of 4D+2), Gan Jan-Ru (repair skill of 2D+2), Tanlee (repair skill of 3D), and Kobe (repair of 2D+2). Each of the support characters roll their skill, and obtain an 8, 11, and 10 respectively.
The result of each character’s attempt must then be examined. For each value of 10, the character involved gives the main character +1D. This is similar to the additional damage dice given for a hit which is 10 more than required. Example: Both Kobe and Tanlee’s results are over 10 and each result gives +1D to the total number of dice Ledala will roll for the final outcome. Gan only rolled 8, so no benefit was obtained. If Tanlee had rolled over 20, the benefit from her repair would have been +2D.
It can be easily seen that a character who is well versed in a particular skill can be of great benefit to a team.
Once the benefit has been determined, the character who was commanding rolls his or her skill appropriate to the task, at -1D since he or she was also commanding. Example: With the benefit of +2D, Ledala now rolls her repair skill of 4D+2 (-1D for commanding), giving her a final roll of 5D+2. The difficulty of the task is 15. She rolls a 17. The Moon Swing is back in action.
The principle works the same with combined fire as well. Using these rules however, a maximum of 6 individuals can combine fire against one target.
