STAR WARS: The Moon Swing Chronicles
A conversation between rebel hero Tanlee, and her new friends Gaaliette and Gelloron:
Tanlee: So tell me Gel, where do you come from?
Gel: I’m a bit shy ‘bout this sort of fing.
Gaaliette: It’s OK Gel. She’s our friend.
Gel: OK. If you say so Gaal. I was very young – which is firty or forty for a Barabel – when I was taken from my planet. I had grown up with mum and dad and 20 other kids on Barab. We’s were a big family. I was one of the smallest of the children which makes you pretty scared huh?
Tanlee: Bigger? Yikes! Please go on though.
Gel: I was the smallest, but I was the most determined of them all. I can only remember bits and pieces of my family, but one fing that stuck, is my wittle sister. I wuved her so much, and I swore to protect her no matter what. One day while I was playing hide and seek wif my sister in the rocky crags of home, a group of nasty pirates ambushed us, and tried to captured her. I was mad, and I fought them off. My attack gave sister some time to get away, but allowed the pirates to capture me. They had a very big gun.
Tanlee: I say it must have been Gel.
Gel: Thank you Tanlee. I think. But anyway, back to my story. I spent a long while with the pirates. They kept me locked away in a cage most of the time ‘cause I was so big and strong. I remember though that I looked forward to my weekly outing to the sports arena. This involved being forced into a pit to fight big and nasty creatures. I didn’t mind so much as I was pretty tuff, and it was good practice. The part I didn’t like were some of the wounds I ended up with, and sometimes they wouldn’t heal for days. And they hurt. The best fing that happened to me was the day that the pirates I was wif landed on Arcan IV. During my time, I was paraded like a “show-bantha”, and was shown to this big slug fellow who called himself Horrak.
Tanlee: They’re called Hutts, Gel.
Gel: I know. Anyway, I overheard that this Hutt needed a new body guard. I was interested in this idea of working rather than being a slave. The pirates allowed me to speak with the Hutt and as soon as we were alone, he offered me a job. He told me that he wouldn’t put me in a cage and that he would give me all the fighting that he would ever want. He also offered me credits to work for him, but I had no use for them, and I told him that I would work for free.
Tanlee: From one slaver to another.
Tanlee: Never mind. Go on.
Gel: OK. The Hutt, who bought me for a hefty sum of cash was my new boss. Once I built up his trust, I was given one of the boss’s many cargo bay as a home. I spent a few years there, but it was very lonely. Most of my time was spent making myself quicker and stronger, so that I could win more fighting competitions and make my boss happy. I worked it out after a while that he didn’t care about my competitions. He as just happy when I bashed some of the boss’s unhappy “clients”. One night while I was asleep, some human had snuck into my home, and began looking in the crates. I was angry, and the human was trespasin’. I moved like the wind, and took my foe by surprise. I grabbed to break the human’s neck, but as I began to twist, I looked down to see the eyes of a young girl. I stopped. What had I done? <snif>
Gaaliette: Its OK Gel. Go on buddy.
Gel: <sniff> I began to hug the child, as her eyes reminded me of my sister, who I had left many years ago at home. I was so sorry for what I had done. She tried to get away, but I was holdin’ her too tight. I held her for a while, making sure that she was alright. After I was sure, I let her go. As soon as I did, she was gone. I was sad. A few weeks later, she came back though. This time, I knew who she was. I apologised for hurting her, and tried to make friends. She was a bit unsure at first, but after a while of chatting, we became friends.
Tanlee: Was the girl you Gaaliette?
Gaaliette: Sure was. This big oaf almost broke me in two. I still get a twinge up my spine occasionally.
Gel: I’m sorry. I really thought you were a bad person.
Gaaliette: I still am – occasionally. Now get on with this story.
Gel: As Gaaliette said, she was the girl. She came back many times after that night, and we soon became close friends. She used to call me Gel-Gel I remember.
Gel: Its true. Anyway, Gaal began visiting more often over the next few years. She told me she was a street kid, and that her family had abandoned her. I pretended to be her big brother. I watched Gaaliette grow up and boy wasn’t it so fast. We trained together, sometimes day and night. Gaaliette would teach me about blasters and stuff, while I showed her how to protect herself in a fight. We liked that. Gaaliette would come every night and train wif me. The two of us would train together until one or both of them collapsed with exhaustion. Usually it was Gaaliette.
Gaaliette: Watch it pal.
Gel: Sorry Gaaliette. Just me cracking a funny. Anyway, when Gaaliette was sleeping, I would sometimes be called away to stand beside my boss while he had his meetings with other people. One night though, Gaal didn’t turn up at her usual time to train. I was worried as she always came before night-fall. After a few hours, I went looking for her and found what was left of a big fight between two gangs. Through the mist and smoke, I found Gaal’s body lying still and bleeding in the gutter. She had been hurt bad. I didn’t know any of that doctor stuff, and I so I didn’t know how to fix her. I took her to the boss, and asked him o help. He was not pleased and told me to get rid of her. I was mad, but he was the boss. I pleaded wif him to help her. The boss sometimes had a sort of sparkle in his eye when he was thinking of somethin’ good. After a second, he had his people higher up than me take Gaaliette away. He told me not to worry, and that she would be fixed. He also said that I was never to ask about her again, and that I would not be able to see her for a long time. I was sad, but my boss knew best.
Tanlee: Really? And you never asked about her? Never wondered what had happened?
Gel: I did want to know, but the boss said not to ask. So I didn’t. I sure didn’t see her for a long time. This made me sad, but I trusted my boss. He said he would look after her, so I believed him.
Gel: Yes. Until that day when I was working. The boss brought us all in, and introduced us to a new body guard. It was Gaaliette. I was very happy. The boss told me that Gaaliete would be working for him, and that she would be my new sort-of-boss, but that I was still o call him boss. It was confusin’ at first, but I eventually worked it out. The boss also told me that that I must protect Gaaliette at all costs since as she was his perfect prize. I didn’t know what that meant, but I guess its because of what he did to Gaalitte to make her better. I was happy to have Gaaliette back. The two of us wen back to training, and we worked well together under the boss. We worked very well travelling all over the place, doing the bosses work. That was until that night when the boss tried to kill us. That night change my life.
“Move along. There’s nofin’ ta see!”
